Science

Fonthill Lodge Independent School is a leading provider of science and environmental studies for the primary age range; securing the coveted Green Flag award and a Royal Society partnership grant.

The science courses are tailored for all the children in their different key stages and abilities.

The science lessons inspire children to learn about science through a very hands-on, imaginative and questioning approach. The children work both individually and as part of a team, as well as whole group activities, and in partnership with professional scientists both parents and local links with science industries centres.

We encourage children to have lively outgoing and enquiring minds. Science specialists are used to bring the topics to life in exciting ways that children understand and remember.

The outdoor environment, with a nature trail, pond, mature hedgerow and gardens, is used frequently to support the children’s learning alongside our well designed and resourced science laboratory.

Every part of the Science curriculum is covered; with preparation for common entrance, SATS and school entrance exams. The lessons build on topics pupils have learnt previously and offer real evidence of progression and creativity.

Science is a continuous process by which we gain knowledge and understanding of the world. It is concerned with acquiring not only knowledge of the laws governing natural phenomena, but also the relationships between their environment and themselves.

Through the study of science children learn about the world around them and gain scientific approaches to working such as decision making, data collection, interpretation of evidence and communication of thoughts and ideas through their own science investigations.

Working towards the Eco-School Award allowed the pupils to gain skills and experiences and raised the profile of recycling and a caring environment. The pupils carried out project work, sat on the eco-committee and had their say on the improvements they wanted to see in the school and grounds. The pupils benefited from team working and problem solving and the school gained the Green Flag-Eco-School Award.
