At Fonthill Lodge we aim to develop each child’s understanding of mathematics to give them confidence in using and applying their knowledge in all situations. We hope to show the children the fascination and fun of mathematics as well as give them the ability to see mathematics all around them in their daily lives.
The National Curriculum is followed, but all children are given the opportunity to extend themselves well beyond National Curriculum expectations. It is expected that all children will achieve a high Level 2 by the end of the Pre Prep and most reach Level 5 by the end of the Junior School. We successfully prepare the children for scholarship and entry examinations at 11+.
Lessons follow guidelines laid down in the National Numeracy Strategy and great attention is paid to developing numerical skills, particularly mental strategies as well as written methods. Number bonds and tables are learnt and our small classes ensure each child receives individual attention. Study is targeted to draw out the potential of individual pupils to encourage them to become creative, independent mathematicians. Excellent interactive resources enrich each lesson and fully engage the children in a wide range of mathematical settings making numeracy a positive learning experience.
