Literacy

We aim to ensure that the exploration of Literacy is an exciting yet challenging experience for all our pupils. We encourage pupils to express themselves creatively and imaginatively and to communicate effectively. Our children become assured readers, understanding what they read and eager to enter the magical world that only books can offer.

In the early years we follow a phonic based multi-sensory approach. Learning through role play, stories and a structured reading and spelling scheme.

In the Junior School our pupils are taught how to communicate formally and informally, with clarity of expression, in both written and spoken form. They learn to analyse and discuss all genres of texts as they experience a diversity of written work.

As their writing develops the children are able to balance creativity with accuracy.

Throughout the school the children are taught using a variety of teaching styles from the more formal to the interactive to suit the Literacy focus.

In our comfortable well resourced library, the children are encouraged to read and discuss a wide range of books for enjoyment and research.

Additional Needs

We monitor children’s progress carefully and provide extra support to those who need it. Individual and small group help is given to children in the classrooms by experienced support teachers. Children with dyslexia can be given extra tuition in school by a visiting teacher from Dyslexia Action.
